A charming Edwardian 15 carat yellow gold dog and cat novelty sûreté brooch which amusingly portrays the age-old rivalry between these creatures.The feline protagonist with a naturalistically engraved body and emerald set eyes.His/her opponent,a playfully characterised dog, with textured body and ruby set eyes.Each party to the ‘dispute ’ stamped ‘15CT’ and connected to the pin at each end – the cat fixed and the dog detachable – by a cleverly devised clip fitting,the sûreté (the French word for safety),to prevent loss.

This type of brooch,also known as the jabot brooch,dates back to the 17th century and was used to secure ornate neck ruffles (the jabot) worn by men and women.With two decorative ornaments at each end,one detachable,the pin slips through the fabric and fastens into the other end.As the pin is hidden from view,the two decorative ornaments have the appearance of floating in the fabric
